It is not clearly mentioned that when did Imam Hussain (a) and his companions got buried. Moreover, researches says, they got buried between 13-15 Muharram 61 Hijri. Most probably it is 14th Muharram or 15th Muharram. As per my research 15th Muharram is the most reliable date in the regard. [Allah knows best]
HOW IMAM (A) WAS BURIED?
Imam Ali Ibnul Hussain Zainul Aabidin (a) with the assistance of the tribesmen of Banu Asad, Angels and the believers from the Jinn identified the bodies and buried Imam Hussain’s headless body along with that of the infant Ali Asghar (a). At the foot of Imam Hussan, he buried Ali al-Akbar (a). Ayatollah Khui used to say that Ali Asghar was kept amd buried on the pierces chest of Imam Hussain (a).
The bodies of the other Hashimites along with other companions of Imam Hussajin (a) were buried in a common graveyard at the foot to one side of Imam Hussain’s grave as we find them today in the miraculous shrine in Karbala (Ganj Shaheedañ).
According to Imam Muhammad Baqir (a), Bani Asad used come Karbala after completing there domestic works and used to bury the bodies of martyrs. Habib bin Muzahhar got buried on 17th Muharram and Jaun got his resting place on 18th Muharram.
Authenticity of presence of Imam Ali Ibnul Hussain Zainul Aabidin (a) came from the debate of Imam Ali Ridha (a) with the sect of Waqfia. Who challenged the Imamate of 8th Imam by saying how it was possible for you to bury Imam Musa Kazim (a) who died in Iraq. Imam Ali Ridha (a) calmly answered them about the burial of Imam Hussain (a) by the hand of Imam Zainul Aabidin (a). [See my yesterday’s post for more details].
WHAT HAPPENED IN KARBALA?
When Banu Asad got the headless trampled body of Imam Hussain (s) by the order of Imam Sajjad (s).
Ibn Shahr Ashub and Mas’oodi say, that the people of village of Ghaziriyyah, who were a group from among the tribe of Bani Asad, buried Imam Hussain (a) and his companions one day after their martyrdom. It is also said, that most of their graves were found prepared and white fowls were seen circumambulating them.
The body was trampled in such a way that only pieces of flesh were found. It is recorded in the accounts of maqatail that Imam Sajjad (s) said :” When I got the body of my father, he chest was attached with his back bone”. In another place Imam said : “My father body was trampled by the horses of Awajjiyah, his flesh was crushed in such a way like that of a physician making medicine by crushing hurbs!”
It is transmitted from Sheikh Al-Tusi, that the (people of) Bani Asad brought a fresh mat placed it under the body of Imam Hussain (a). It is related from Deezaj, that Imam Sajjad (s) says that I, along with a group of my particular slaves, dug open the grave of Imam Hussain (a). I saw a fresh mat on which lay the body of Imam Hussain), while the fragrance of musk was emanating from it. I kept the mat at its original place on which the body of Imam was lying. Then I ordered that earth be filled in (the grave) and water to be sprinkled upon it.
Akhbarul Tawal writes that when the body of Imam Hussain (s) discovered and when Imam Sajjad (s) tried to carry it up, all the parts fell down like that of broken earthen pot. Imam was continuously crying during the funeral of his father.
Author of Akhbarul Tawal adds from the account of Imam Jawad (s) that Imam’s fingers were cut down , his ribs were broken, his skin was ripped off by daggers and his thighs flesh was torned by swords. His heart was ripped off by lance, his left eye was pierced. His forehead was broken. His collar bone was broken. Hamid bin Muslim counts 1900 wounds on his body.
MufazzaI narrates from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (s) that none of the body part of Imam Hussain remained untouched by the swords, Lances and arrows. Imam Sajjad buried him in the condition that he put his body on his head like a bundle of wheat.
After burying his father, Imam Sajjad (s) took some soil of his father’s grave and tied it in his clothes and move towards Banu Asad. He said : “I am the Imam of your time (Hujjatu Allah), I am Ali bin Hussain (s), came to bury my father’s dead body along with my brothers, uncles, cousins, and their supporters who sacrificed their hearts defending him, and now I am going back to bin Ziyad’s prison (May Allah curse him). As for you, congratulations to you, you shall not be terrified or blamed for not helping us”.
BURIAL OF ABUL FADHLIL ABBAS (A).
According to the narration from ‘Maqatil’ burial of Abulfadhlil Abbas (a) was also done by the hand of Imam Zainul Aabidin (a) on the bank of tributary Furat.
It is mentioned that Imam (a) collected the body parts of the valiant warrior of Banu Hashim in a bundle of straw and make it in a circular shape. Ibn Nima narrates that Imam (a) was continuously shivering and crying to see the body of Uncle and was cursing his killers. Imam Sajjad (a) dug out a small grave and bury him into that. Nimatulla Jazayeri says, Imam Sajjad (a) shouted, Uncle! would that you have seen that scene of torching tents when all women (from progeny of holy Prophet) were calling you.”
The body of Abulfadhlil Abbas (a) was almost chopped by swords and lances and few parts of his body was completely converted into mince.
Imam Sajjad (a) ordered to make a grave near the grave of Abulfadhlil Abbas (a) and said only two bodies were left, and Imam (a) ordered to make a grave for these two by the side. When Banu Asad asked who are in these graves. Imam (a) replied,” Brothers of my Uncle Abbas!”
BURIAL OF ALI ASGHAR (A)
Abdullah Radhi Ali Asghar’s (a) body was also trampled by the army of Umar Saad. Akhnas bin Alqama Hazrami was the one who trampeld the body of infant of Karbala. Imam Sajjad (a) took the baby’s body in his palm and put it inside the pierced chest of his father as indicated by Ibn Jauzi.
Extra : It is clear that Imam Sajjad (a) not buried all the bodies of martyrs as he returned to Kufa. For more, Kindly read Jawawad Muhaddisi’s Farhang Ashura.
Imam Mahdi (ajtf), twelfth and final Imam from the progeny of Prophet (p), says in his Ziyarah An-Nahiyah:
“Salutations upon the un-shrouded and unattended corpses,
Salutations upon the corpses whose colors were transformed by the scorching heat,
Salutations upon the pools of blood that were absorbed by the earth of Karbala,
May Allah curse all of those who killed Imam Hussain (a) and his companions. May Allah curse all of those who were silent on the massacre of Karbala. May Allah curse all the those who try to make weak the calamity of Karbala.
