O mankind! You are the ones who stand in need of Allah, and Allah is All-sufficient, the All-laudable. (Surah Fatir, Ayah: 15)
In the beginning I want to express my thanks and appreciation to Professor Tariq Mansoor, the honourable Vice –Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University and Professor Ali Muhammad Naqvi, Director, Dara Shikoh Centre for Interfaith Understanding and Dialogue, Aligarh Muslim University for organizing a very important International Webinar titled “The Role of Faith in Facing Crises: (What Religion can offer to the Post-Covid World) and also thank the distinguished guests for attending the webinar.
The subject of the world after the Covid-19 pandemic is very important because this pandemic have emerged as an adversity for the entire world which have affected all the equations in the world and certainly the world after this pandemic in the political, economic, cultural, religious and social aspects will be different from the world before the pandemic.
If we look into this aspect with religious perspective the role of religion during the ongoing pandemic and after the pandemic is very worthwhile and effective and their reasons are mentioned as follows:
1-Mankind today which is engulfed in severe difficulties and helplessness is in dire need of inner peace and boosting the morale which makes medical cure and recovery 50 percent easy and the factor which gives confidence and peace of heart to mankind is spirituality, religiosity and devotion to Almighty God. When the human being becomes helpless from all the material means develops more devotion to God and the feeling of seeking God is also strengthened. Mankind for his livelihood needs science and knowledge and for facing the calamities needs faith and spiritual energy and devotion to the infinite power of Almighty God.
2-In the view of Islam, human being is weak and dependent before God but unfortunately the human being today by relying on the military and technological power have become arrogant and conceited which is the main reason of all the tyrannies and belligerent acts in the world. But the Covid-19 pandemic shattered the conceit of the arrogant powers and forced them to think about their weakness. Thus, we notice that the most powerful country in the world was worst inflicted by the ongoing pandemic which forced them to wake from the slumber and accept their weakness and they have understood this heavenly message that “O mankind! You are the ones who stand in need of Allah, and Allah is All-sufficient, the All-laudable”. It means that the mankind is dependent on God and should not be proud of its possessions.
3-The Covid-19 pandemic have awakened the sense of cooperation and helping the poor and this is the message of religions which calls for help to each other. During this ongoing pandemic in Iran the people’s cooperation and help to each other have reached its peak and the people extended their necessary help to the poor and needy so that they should not be affected by the pandemic. In the view of Islam, the calamities have the dimensions of examining and testing the faithful and pious servants of God that how they extend their humanitarian help and assistance in these conditions.
For resolving the Covid-19 pandemic problem assistance have to be obtained from these factors.
First: Assistance have to be obtained from the science and knowledge in particular from the achievements and advancements in the medical sciences. All the safeguard guidelines and protocols as proposed by the medical experts to combat the pandemic have to be taken into full consideration. Islam considers safeguarding the body health as a religious obligation and following the safeguard guidelines and protocols as proposed by the medical experts to combat the pandemic are also a religious obligation. If by not following the safeguard medical guidelines and if it results in transmitting the infection to others is considered as a major and unpardonable sin.
Second: Strengthening the faith and spirituality in the shadow of religiosity and boosting the morale of people and inclining them to Almighty God.
Third: The solidarity among all the governments and nations in particular the religious leaders can play a very important role in mobilizing the masses to cooperate with each other and to give spiritual morale. The religious messages in this regard should be disseminated and stressed upon.
While concluding, I pray to Almighty God to relieve the mankind from this calamity and awaken the humanity from slumber and compel the arrogant and conceited to accept humility, humbleness and respect the rights of others.
I offer my regards and good wishes to all.
